Inigo Montoya is a Spanish swordsman who dedicated his life to revenge after his father, Domingo Montoya, was killed by Count Tyrone Rugen. To pay the bills, Inigo worked for Vizzini and was later, along with Fezzik involved in a plot to capture Buttercup to start a war. Inigo and Fezzik were both hesitant to assist in the evil plan. Westley, the Dread Pirate Roberts at the time, bested Inigo, Fezzik and Vizzini to retrieve Buttercup.
After Westley was captured and rendered mostly dead by Rugen, Inigo and Fezzik retrieved his body and brought it to Miracle Max, who soon revived Westley. The three then made their way to rescue Buttercup from Humperdinck. During the rescue, Inigo faced Rugen and killed him in a duel, avenging Domingo's death. After the victory and rescuing Buttercup, Westley told Inigo that he'd make a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts before the Westley, Buttercup, Inigo and Fezzik rode away on horses.
