This page is about Buttercup from the 1987 film. For the version from the 1973 book, see Buttercup (book).

Buttercup, is a princess and Westley's lover. The two fell in love when they met on her farm and were later separated when Westley left to seek his fortune due to not having money for marriage. Westley was later presumed to be killed by Ryan, the Dread Pirate Roberts at the time of his departure. Five years later, Buttercup had been forced into an engagement with Prince Humperdinck. Westley soon returned and rescued Buttercup from Fezzik, Inigo Montoya and Vizzini, who had kidnapped her with the goal to start a war.

However, Westley and Buttercup were confronted by Humperdinck after escaping the Fire swamp and Westley was captured. He was later rendered mostly dead by Tyrone Rugen. Fezzik and Inigo, who were hesitant to help in Vizzini's plan, retrieved Westley from the Pit of Despair and revived him with a pill given to them by Miracle Max. The three rescued Buttercup from Humperdinck, with Inigo slaying Rugen and fulfilling his quest for vengeance in the process. Westley, Buttercup, Inigo and Fezzik then rode off on four horses, with Westley and Buttercup sharing a kiss shortly after.
